ST PATRICK’S DAY HILLWALKING FESTIVAL

17^th - 21^st March 2010 - Achill Island.

 
This festival package is offered exclusivly by Óstán Oileán Acla and Achill native Tomás Mac Lochlainn who is a Professional International Mountain Leader.

 

PROGRAMME

Tues.16^th

10p.m  -  Welcome Wine & Cracker Reception in Ostán Oileán Acla to brief participants on walks festival timetable.

 
Wed 17^th

 
Walk with the Pipebands.  This is a free day and two options are available.

 (1)       A unique opportunity to walk and march with the Achill Pipe Bands through the villages of lower Achill and listen to the music of the highland pipes and drums .

(2)       Choose a route out of the Achill walks booklet.  We will be delighted to give advice on either.

 Thurs.18^th

 Slievemore 672M:  Come join Tomás and his team as they expertly guide you across Achill’s  2^nd  highest hill.  Scramble along its North face terrace and pass under the Skull.  Hear stories of its history and caves.  Enjoy the situation of this delightful hill that offers a 360º vista of the surrounding, hills, sea and Islands.

 Fri.19^th

 Annagh Strand.  Visit this remote area of Achill and explore the Booley Village, Megalithic Tomb and Corrie Lake with Tomás and experience the tranquillity of this peaceful area.

 FRI.19^thNight Walk.

No this is not a pub crawl, but an unique opportunity to experience Achill’s views and wildlife under the stars. A headtorch or good handtorch is essential.

Sat.20^th

 Croaghaun 688M .  Climb Achill’s highest hill via the western ridge which brings you on to the highest Seacliffs in Europe with its unforgettable and airy views.  Go where only the feral goats dare to tread.  Of course you will be guided by Tomás on this unforgetable climb.

Sun.21^st

Knockmore 337m.   A surprising hill with lots of variety.  There is an option to try an ABSEIL with Tomás.   All specialist equipment is provided.   There is no pressure to take part if you do not wish.

Your guide Tomás is a qualified I.M.L. and a member of U.I.M.L.A. and M.C.I.

Tomás also holds the Winter Mtn. Leader and Rockclimbing leader qualifications.  Tomás is an Achill native with an insight into Achill’s history and archaeology.

 Safety.

The International Mountain Leader  has  the recognised qualification for leading others professionally, ie., for reward throughout Ireland, Europe and further afield.  All walks guided by Tomás are covered by Professional Indemnity Insurance and full Public Liability Insurance.

 Important:

 all walks are hillwalks requiring full hillwalking equiptment .

    Numbers  on  walks are  restricted  for  safety  and  to  adhere  to  the principles of the countryside  code  and sustainable  walking  based on ‘leave no   trace’ .
