This new off road cycle track has been completed and was opened to the public by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny in July 2011. The route is 42km in length. The cycle route begins or finishes on Achill Island, depending where you start out on your journey. The route takes you along the old Railway line from Achill Island to Westport. The first train officially ran along the old track in 1894. The track takes you across some of the most beautiful scenery in the west of Ireland. Adult & Children bike hire can be obtained from different providers in the locality. Walkers can enjoy a safe route to journey along while taking in the local flora and natural peatlands that sweep down to the shore. Óstán Oileán Acla (Achill Island Hotel) is ideally situated to begin your journey on this magnificant trail. A sense of tranquility, peace, one with nature, are some of the pleasures you can experience when cyclying or walking The Great Western Greenway. Groups of 10 or more people can be collected from our nearest Train Station. You can continue your experience through the Island following the designated Cycle Hubs that lead you through a challanging cycle covering some of the most beautiful scenery. http://www.achilltourism.com/dwl/achill-cycle-hub.pdf
